How do most colonic injuries occur?

If the colon is damaged, the culprit is almost always (>95%) some form of penetrating trauma - either a knife or a gun shot, etc. Most colonic injuries of this kind are discovered during laparotomy (exploratory or otherwise), and the major complications are infectious (thanks to fecal spillage). They include peritonitis, intraabdominal abscesses and septicaemia.

Very occasionally, colonic injuries can be due to blunt force trauma. This occurs predominantly as a result of the seat belt suddenly forcing itself on the abdomen. (This does not mean you shouldn't be wearing one though!!)
